When is the best time to visit the Galapagos Islands?
You're able to experience incredible wildlife encounters and natural beauty year-round, but the best time to visit depends on your preferences. From December to May, the islands experience warmer temperatures and calmer seas, making it the perfect time for snorkeling and diving. This period also coincides with the breeding season for several marine species, such as sea lions and sea turtles.
From June to November, the islands experience cooler temperatures and nutrient-rich waters, attracting a higher concentration of marine life. This is the ideal time to spot migratory species like whales and dolphins. Ultimately, any time is a great time to visit, as its unique ecosystem promises remarkable experiences throughout the year.
Is WiFi Available?
WiFi availability varies by ship category. Luxury and first-class are more likely to offer WiFi, although it may be limited due to the remote location and there may be an additional cost.
Even if Wifi is available, we recommend pre-loading any movies, music or other entertainment you may want.
Keep in mind that disconnecting from the internet is often part of the experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural wonders.
Should I Expect Motion Sickness?
Motion sickness can be a concern for some travelers due to the open sea. To mitigate this, choose a larger, more stable ship if you're prone to motion sickness. You can also bring motion sickness medication or wristbands.
The waters in the Galapagos are generally calmer from June to November, which may be a better time for those concerned about seasickness.
Are Family-Friendly Cabins Available?
Yes, many ships offer family-friendly cabins and itineraries. These cabins are designed to accommodate families, often with extra beds or connecting rooms.
When booking a family-friendly cruise, inquire about cabin options suitable for your family's size and needs to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Are there any age limits?
There are no age limits for visiting the Galapagos National Park. However, the minimum suggested age is 6 years old if you want to participate in all of the activities. Each land-based activity generally takes 1-2 hours of exercise which can be difficult for your kids. There are also few public bathrooms available and you must be accompanied by a guide at all times, so you generally cannot separate from the group.
Similar limitations exist for passengers at the other end of the age spectrum. We do routinely see passengers 70+ years old that can handle the hiking and snorkeling. But, in case you can't, some ships offer less strenuous activities to ensure everyone can enjoy a trip of a lifetime.
How Far in Advance Should I Book?
For regular Galapagos Cruises, it's advisable to book well in advance, preferably six months to a year ahead of your planned travel dates.
However, last minute cruises generally start opening availability 60 days from the cruise embarkation date. They may keep sales open up until 10 days before the cruise departs or until there is no more availability.
How Much to Tip?
Whilst many passengers do tip tour guides and vessel crew members, don't feel pressured into providing more than you feel is appropriate for the service provided.
As a starting point, we suggest $10-$15 per person per day for guides and another $20 - $40 per person per day for the vessel crew members. You may also want to combine tips with other guests too.
How Much Do Cruises Cost?
The cost of Galapagos Cruises vary widely based on the ship category, length of the cruise and the season. Budget trips can start at around $1,400 to $2,000 per person. Tourist superior typically range from $2,000 to $3,000, with first class from $3,000 to $5,000 and luxury anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 or more per person.
